"Why Hunger Still Exists in 2026 — And How Your 50,000 UGX Feeds a Child for a Month" Hunger in rural Uganda doesn’t always look like empty fields. In 2026, it looks like a child falling asleep in class because there was no breakfast. It looks like a mother watering down beans so they last 2 more days. It looks like a full stomach of posho, but a body that’s still weak from lack of nutrients. After working with 47 communities across Eastern Uganda, we’ve learned that hunger comes from 3 problems that keep repeating. 1. The Seasonal Gap Uganda has two harvests a year. But between February-April and August-October, families enter the "lean season." Food stores are empty. Market prices for maize and beans double. A mother who earned 10,000 UGX last month now earns 4,000. She has to choose: food or school fees. Food often loses. 2. Access, Not Just Availability There is food in Mbale market. But 68% of families we serve live more than 5km from a main road. Transport costs make everything expensive. And with no savings, one sickness can erase a month’s food budget. 3. Health and Nutrition A child can eat three times a day and still be malnourished. Without clean water, kids get diarrhea and can’t absorb nutrients. Without knowledge of proteins and vegetables, families stay full but stay unhealthy. Food aid helps in emergencies. But lasting change takes emergency meals + kitchen gardens + health education. That’s what our School Feeding Program is built to do. Here’s What Happens When You Donate 50,000 UGX We believe in being fully transparent. Here’s exactly how we use your 50,000 UGX: 32,500 UGX goes straight to food. This buys maize flour, beans, rice, cooking oil, and fresh greens. It’s enough to provide 20 nutritious meals for 1 child for a full school month. 7,500 UGX covers transport. This pays for fuel and boda fees to deliver food every week to 3 rural schools. Some schools are down muddy roads with no public transport. Without this, the food never arrives. 5,000 UGX keeps the kitchen running. This covers firewood, charcoal, and maintaining the large cooking pots and utensils we use to prepare meals for hundreds of children daily. 5,000 UGX is for monitoring and reporting. Heavy rains delayed 2 weeks of deliveries. But by buying food in bulk with two other charities, we kept costs down and no child missed a meal. We also run nutrition training in 12 villages. Mothers are learning to grow sukuma, dodo, and beans in small kitchen gardens. In 18 months, we’ve seen 40% fewer cases of child stunting in those communities. You Can End the Cycle Short term: We feed kids today so they can learn today. Long term: We teach families to grow food so they don’t need us forever. 50,000 UGX won’t solve hunger.
